Today it poured rain. This isn't the first time it's rained since I've been here, but I'm pretty sure this is the most it's rained. The first time it rained was right after school in early January. The kids ran outside and slid on the ridiculously slick bricks and tiles of our front terrace. Since there is no drainage system, the water pools rapidly and just sits until it evaporates or until a worker squeegees it aside into the sand. I hear the kids love to wade around in the pools of dirty water and then come back into the school to track it all over the floor.
Many buildings in this city are not meant to withstand rain, and I'm told that I have to move my computer and any papers away from walls. Nothing must remain on the floor.
The smell of rain is the same, and mingles with the smell of KFC from across the street. The people of Dubai get to turn on their windshield wipers for one of the four or five times that they will need them in a year. As I walk down the street I see drivers have no concept of slowing down as they drive through puddles, to be careful not to splash pedestrians. I deftly dodge the splashes.
I lika da precipitation.
